Paradise Lost Quick Bio

There were many pioneers in the field of Gothic Metal, but there were none who were as unique and diverse as Paradise lost. First formed back in 1988, Paradise Lost currently consists of vocalist Nick Holmes, lead guitarist Greg Mackintosh, rhythm guitarist Aaron Aedy, bass player Steve Edmondson, and drum player Adrian Erlandsson. Influenced by bands such as Kreator, Celtic Frost, Candlemass, Death, Morbid Angel, and Repulsion, Paradise Lost set-out to shake metal's core, releasing three of the heaviest albums in metal history (Lost Paradise in 1990, Gothic in 1992, and Shades of God in 1992). Things changed a little bit, when the albums Icon (1993) and the highly praised Draconic Times (1995) gained more of a melodic feel to them, but their biggest change would come in on 1997 with the release of One Second. This marked the period where Paradise Lost delved into the realm of electronica, and they would stay in that realm for two more albums, Host (1999), and Believe In Nothing (2001). This caused their core fans to get confused, yet at the same time brought in a new generation of fans. Luckily, they began returning to their roots, after the release of Symbol of Life (2002). The albums released since then, such as Paradise Lost (2005), In Requiem (2007), and Faith Divided Us - Death Unites Us (2009), reassured metal fans that the electronica era was just a phase. On April 23, 2012, the band released their 13th album, Tragic Idol, to a crowd of eager and grateful fans.

Taken from Wikipedia: "Alice Cooper (born Vincent Damon Furnier; February 4, 1948) is an American rock singer, songwriter, and musician whose career spans more than four decades. With a stage show that features guillotines, electric chairs, fake blood, boa constrictors, and baby dolls, Cooper has drawn equally from horror movies, vaudeville, and garage rock to pioneer a grandly theatrical and violent brand of heavy metal designed to shock.

Originating in Detroit in the late 1960s, Alice Cooper was originally a band consisting of Furnier on vocals and harmonica, lead guitarist Glen Buxton, Michael Bruce on rhythm guitar, Dennis Dunaway on bass guitar, and drummer Neal Smith. The original Alice Cooper band broke into the international music mainstream with the 1971 hit "I'm Eighteen" from the album Love It to Death, which was followed by the even bigger single "School's Out" in 1972. The band reached their commercial peak with the 1973 album Billion Dollar Babies.

Furnier's solo career as Alice Cooper, adopting the band's name as his own name, began with the 1975 concept album Welcome to My Nightmare; in 2011 he released Welcome 2 My Nightmare, his 19th album as a solo artist, and his 26th album in total. Expanding from his Detroit rock roots, in his career Cooper has experimented with a number of musical styles, including conceptual rock, art rock, hard rock, New Wave, pop rock, experimental rock and industrial rock.

Alice Cooper is known for his social and witty persona offstage; The Rolling Stone Album Guide has called him the world's most "beloved heavy metal entertainer". Cooper is credited with helping to shape the sound and look of heavy metal, and he is regarded as being the artist who "first introduced horror imagery to rock'n'roll, and whose stagecraft and showmanship have permanently transformed the genre".Away from music, Cooper is a film actor, a golfing celebrity, a restaurateur and, since 2004, a popular radio DJ with his classic rock show Nights with Alice Cooper.

In 2011 the original Alice Cooper band was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."

Taken from Wikipedia: "Mark Antony (Latin: M·ANTONIVS·M·F·M·N) (January 14, 83 BC – August 1, 30 BC) was a Roman politician and general. As a military commander and administrator, he was an important supporter and loyal friend of his mother's cousin, Julius Caesar. After Caesar's assassination, Antony formed an official political alliance with Octavian (the future Augustus) and Lepidus, known to historians today as the Second Triumvirate.

The triumvirate broke up in 33 BC. Disagreement between Octavian and Antony erupted into civil war, the final war of the Roman Republic, in 31 BC. Antony was defeated by Octavian at the naval Battle of Actium, and in a brief land battle at Alexandria. He and his lover Cleopatra committed suicide shortly thereafter. His career and defeat are significant in Rome's transformation from Republic to Empire."

Taken from Wikipedia: "Darius I, the Great (Old Persian: Dārayava(h)uš) (550–486 BCE), formally known as Darius the Great, was the third king of the Achaemenid Empire. Darius held the empire at its peak, then including much of West Asia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, parts of the Balkans (Bulgaria-Romania-Panonia), portions of north and northeast Africa including Egypt (Mudrâya), eastern Libya, coastal Sudan, Eritrea), as well as most of Pakistan, the Aegean Islands and northern Greece/Thrace-Macedonia.

Darius ascended the throne by overthrowing the alleged magus usurper of Bardiya with the assistance of six other Persian noble families; Darius was crowned the following morning. The new king met with rebellions throughout his kingdom and quelled them each time. A major event in Darius's life was his expedition to punish Athens and Eretria for their aid in the Ionian Revolt and subjugate Greece. Darius expanded his empire by conquering Thrace and Macedon and invading Scythia, home of the Scythians, nomadic tribes who invaded Media and had previously killed Cyrus the Great.

Darius organized the empire by dividing it into provinces and placing satraps to govern it. He organized a new uniform monetary system, along with making Aramaic the official language of the empire. Darius also worked on construction projects throughout the empire, focusing on Susa, Pasargadae, Persepolis, Babylon and Egypt. Darius devised a codification of laws for Egypt. He also had the cliff-face Behistun Inscription carved, an autobiography of great modern linguistic significance. Darius also started many massive architectural projects, including magnificent palaces in Persepolis and Susa."

Who Got The Edge
Gladius vs Khoplesh: The Khoplesh gets the edge. Although earlier examples were made of bronze, the blade has a greater reach than the Gladius. In addition to the reach, the Khoplesh's particular shape increases the chance for it to disarm someone, or possibly take away a shield if a fighter is using one.
Pilum Javelin vs Egyptian Spear: The Pilum gets the edge. The Egyptian Spear does have a decent length, but it can't be thrown because of it's length. The Pilum can be used up close, but it's strength relies on it's ability to be thrown and get stuck in the enemy's armor.
Roman Bow & Arrow vs Egyptian Bow & Arrow: The Roman Bow & Arrow gets the edge. It is made from higher quality materials, the arrow tips were also made from better materials (the Romans used iron, while the Egyptian arrow tips were made from flint, bronze, and iron), and the shooter can put more strength into each of his shots.
Roman Breastplate vs Scale Armor: Both of these armors get the edge. They both offer roughly the same amount of protection, but the Roman Breastplate is made from superior material and is heavier, while the Scale Armor is lighter, but made from weaker materials.

Common Quality
Passion: Both of these warriors were highly passionate. Mark Anthony had a great love for his empire, and a great love for Cleopatra. He would do anything to protect either of them, and he wouldn't allow anything to get in his way. Darius the Great was a great ruler, who had many interesting ideas and plans about his empire. Whenever he saw a chance to improve his empire, he took it.

Setup
"General Anthony, are you sure he's coming?" asked a legionnaire to his commander.

Mark Anthony did not answer him. He was on-top of his horse, looking out onto the scorching desert. It should be pointed out that it was high afternoon in the Egyptian Desert, and the sun's heat was so immense, even the smallest of creatures would die in a fiery instant. The two legionnaires were standing right next to their leader, keeping eyes out for their target. As Anthony began to take a drink of water from his treated animal stomach, one of his men tapped him on the leg, pointing out into the desert. Anthony quickly put the stomach back into the satchel, and looked through a spyglass that the legionnaire to his right gave him. Sure enough, Anthony could see someone riding in on a horse, leading a chariot piloted by another warrior, with a very stately individual standing next to him. Smiling, Mark Anthony handed the spyglass back to the legionnaire, who was quick to ask him a question.

"Sir, is that Lord Darius coming this way?"

"Indeed." replied Anthony with a grim tone to his voice. "He's been giving Lady Cleopatra trouble, and I've decided to take up this matter personally."

"Understood sir." the Legionnaire said.

As Darius and his two men were getting closer and closer, Mark Anthony was readying his bow for a fatal shot on the horse rider. The arrow had wicked barbs on it, so it was certain that it would cause a nasty wound. With the wind just right, and the horse rider in the right position, Anthony let loose the barbed arrow. It flew with the grace of Ceaser's speed, right at the horse rider. The arrow landed right in the rider's chest, and pierced the heart. The rider's horse just stopped, and the body fell right onto the hot desert sand.


Mark Anthony: 3/Darius the Great: 2


Anthony handed the bow back to the legionnaire on his left, who quickly hooked it back onto his horse's saddle. When the chariot slowed down, that was when he gave the order.

"Men...let's ride!"

The two legionnaires immediately got on their horses, and the group of three began riding down the sandy hill after Darius. Seeing the small group coming towards him, Darius grasped his prized bow, and readied a thin, leaf-shaped arrow, which was perfect for piercing armor. When the group got close enough to be hit, he let loose the arrow, and it quickly made contact with the legionnaire riding on Anthony's left. The horse the legionnaire was riding immediately bucked the body off, and it tumbled down a small sand dune. Anthony had no time to inspect the body more closely, but he could see from a distance that there was no helping that soldier.


Mark Anthony: 2/Darius the Great: 2


Darius smiled, and he immediately ordered his chariot rider to speed off away from this scene. Mark Anthony and the surviving legionnaire spurred their horses to ride faster, and the horses did. Darius tried to get his rider to make the horses pull the chariot faster than they already were, but the driver said to him that the horses were already under enough stress from what was going on. Getting a little frustrated, Darius grasped the reigns from his soldier, who moved over to the left. As he tried to grabbed the spear, he was greeted by a legionnaire riding right next to him, and a second later he was also greeted by a Pilum to the stomach. The soldier tried to pull the javelin out, but in the process accidentally fell out of the chariot, and shoving the Pilum further into his body, causing it to pierce his backside.


Mark Anthony: 2/Darius the Great: 1


Darius quickly looked to his right, and saw the legionnaire getting another Pilum ready. Reacting like a hawk, he quickly picked up the spear, and thrusted it into the legionnaire's neck. Blood started gushing out, and the legionnaire tried all he could to stop the bleeding, but the effort was useless. Within a few more seconds, the legionnaire suddenly lost consciousness, then fell off his horse, and onto the desert sand with a muffled thump.


Mark Anthony: 1/Darius the Great: 1


Seeing an opportunity to end his rival, Mark Anthony drew his Gladius, and rode up to Darius's right. Darius promptly dropped the spear, and drew his highly decorate Khoplesh. Anthony got a little closer, and the two began dueling. The sounds of metal clanging against metal could be heard all over as the wind carried the sounds of battle all over. Unfortunately for Anthony, Darius's Khoplesh kept him at arm's length most of the time, making it difficult for him to land a killing blow. Yet he was able to get a couple hits in on Darius's blade, so the hope wasn't completely diminished.

The two continued to ride through the desert, clashing swords. Darius was starting to get a little tired, but he still fought back with as much as he could give. Mark Anthony wasn't showing any signs of fatigue, which was remarkable given the environment he was in. This fight went on, until Anthony finally saw the opening he was looking for. As Darius raised his arm particularly high, Anthony got a cut in on the underside of the limb, causing his opponent to drop the blade. Darius looked at the desert for just one fatal second, as he felt Anthony's Gladius slid quickly across his throat. The torrent of blood was gory, yet somehow impressive at the same time. The body of the now dead king fell into the desert sands, and Mark Anthony knew that his job was done. Now all he needed to do was get out of the desert, and find a nice piece of shade to rest in.

Mark Anthony vs Darius the Great Weapon Preview

This is it everybody. We're on the final legs of my last season. I got one more historical icon battle, then it's down to the pop culture fights. Today, I give you a preview of the last icon matchup, where the lover of Cleopatra, Mark Anthony, takes on one of the Middle East's greatest kings, Darius the Great.

Mark Anthony Weapons
Gladius: This was one of the longest used weapons in the Roman Army. In actuality, the word Gladius was just a basic term to describe any kind of sword, and it was the basis of the word Gladiator. The weapon itself was almost 18 inches long, and had a tapered point that made it great for stabbing. Despite it's thrusting abilities, the Gladius can also cut and slice very well. The handle of the weapon was made out of corrugated bone (more than likely animal) that was ridged for individual fingers, and had a round pommel to keep the hand from sliding off.

Pilum Javelin: A good weapon up close, and a great weapon to be used at range. The Pilum was composed of a medium sized wooden shaft, and a length of iron with a small pyramid-shaped head. This brought the weapon's length to 6.6 feet long, and the weight ranged from 4.4 to 11 pounds. Although a user could throw the Pilum up to a maximum distance of 100 feet, it was really effective from 50 to 65 feet. What is most interesting about this weapon was that the metal section was designed to bend and break once it hit something, disabling any attempt for an opponent to throw it back.

Roman Bow & Arrow: Woe to anyone who was in a siege with the Romans. The Romans used a composite bow that was primarily composed of a single piece of wood, and supported with leather. The bow was rather large, as it was almost 6 feet long from one tip to the other. The bow also had an impressive draw weight, measuring in from 30 pounds to 60 pounds. The arrows shot from this bow generally had iron tips, which easily pierced most armors of that time.

Roman Breastplate: The Lorica Segementata was the most common type of armor in the Roman Army. Worn over a tunic (which was always red), the breastplate was made of several pieces of iron, tied together with leather string. This made the armor very light to wear, and allowed for a good degree of flexibility, not to mention offering an equally good amount of protection.

Darius the Great Weapons
Khoplesh: A very strange looking sword when first examined, the Khoplesh is also a deadly sword. Typically 20 to 24 inches in length (there were also smaller versions), this one-edged sword had the unique feature of having a hook at the top of the weapon. This hook was used to grip a shield and pull it away, or to disarm opponents. Although the Khoplesh was first made of bronze, iron was later used to create a sturdier & deadlier blade.

Egyptian Spear: Although not as important among New Kingdom Egyptians, the spear was still a valued weapon among charioteers and horse riders. The earliest examples were short and javelin-like, and so in that regard could possibly be compared to the Pilum. Bronze was the metal most often used, as it was cheap and easy to produce, but Iron eventually replaced Bronze somewhere down the line.

Egyptian Bow & Arrow: The main weapon of the Egyptains, the bow & arrow was just as important during war as it was when hunting. Originally a single-curve bow, a composite example was later used due to it's easier handling. Construction of a Egyptian composite bow was also easier, as the single bow the earlier Egyptians used required much more maintenance. Even the arrows changed over time, as they started out with Flint tips, then Bronze, and finally Iron.

Scale Armor: Because of Africa's extreme temperatures, little armor was worn. Soldiers, for instance, rarely if ever wore any kind of armor. The exception to this rule were the Pharaohs of Egypt, who wore scale armor shirts. Made from Bronze, the scale shirt covered the entire torso, but not the legs. They were protected by the chariot that the Pharaoh rode in.

Teddy Roosevelt vs Hermann Detzner

Beginning Analysis: What happens when two badasses from opposite ends of the globe meet head-on? Read on to see who...is...deadliest!?

Teddy Roosevelt Quick Bio

Containing just as much myth as reality, the life of Teddy Roosevelt is a remarkable one. Born on October 27, 1858 to parents Theodore Roosevelt Sr & Martha "Mittie" Bulloch, Teddy was the second of four children. Unfortunately for his youth, Teddy Roosevelt was stricken with asthma, had horrible eyesight, and was considered very sickly. Yet, he didn't allow his ailments to take over his life, and began a program of heavy exercise and pursuing areas of knowledge that interested him. Eventually, he overcame his disabilities, and became a expert cowboy, hunter, and politician. Yet, it was his actions during the Spanish-American War, when he resigned from the navy, formed the Rough Riders, and charged into Cuba with guns blazing, and defeated the Spanish. His life continued to be remarkable, until January 6, 1919, when he died of health complications at the age of 60.

Hermann Detzner Quick Bio

If Teddy Roosevelt was a badass from America, then Hermann Detzner was equally a German badass. The son of Johann Philipp Detzner, a famous dentist, Hermann trained himself in the areas of topography, surveying, and engineering. His skills in these areas was so great he was promoted to Fahnrich (Ensign) 6 Infantry Regiment (Prussian), 2nd Pioneer Battalion, in February of 1902. From 1908 to 1909, as well as from 1912 to 1913, Detzner was part of a joint German-British science & surveying expedition to Kamerun in Central Africa(Kamerun would later become the Republic of Cameroon). After Kamerun, Detzner would travel to New Guinea and survery the border between the English & German sections of the island, as well as explore it's interior. Complications arose when World War 1 started, as Australian forces were looking for him in the jungle. Detzner would not allow the capture of himself and his men, so they wandered the jungle for 4 years, evading capture the whole time. During these years, his men would brazenly hold up the German flag, and loudly sang "Watch on the Rhine" and other Germanic tunes. After the war, he had return to his home country as a war hero, and wrote "Four Years Among the Cannibals in the Interior of German New Guinea under the Imperial Flag, from 1914 until the Armistice" to satisfy those who were curious about his adventure. Yet the writing of this book became, in a sense, Detzner's downfall, as many sections were later discovered to fictitious, or a mix of fact & fiction. Because of this discovery, Detzner withdrew from public life, yet still had his job at the colonial archive. He lived in Schmargendorf, Berlin, where he Carl-Pfeffer Verlag, a publishing house in Heidelberg. He lived in the city until December 1, 1970, when he died at the age of 88.

Who Got The Edge
Colt Bisley vs Luger PO8: The Luger PO8 gets the edge. The pistol is lighter (1.92lb compared to the Bisley's weight of 2.3lb), has a higher ammo capacity (holds 8 rounds while the Bisley holds 6 rounds), has a wide variety of barrel lengths (Lugers were made with barrels that ranged from 3.74 inches to 7.87 inches, while the Bisley was made with 4¾-, 5½- and 7½-inch barrels), and is a semi-auto weapon while the Bisley is a single-action weapon.
1896 Krag vs Gewehr 98: Both rifles get the edge. They both have the same capacity (5 rounds), but the 1896 Krag has the longer barrel (762mm compared to the Gewehr 98's barrel length of 740mm), and the greater effective range (900m compared to the Gewehr 98's effective range of 500 to 800m), but the Gewehr 98 uses a larger caliber (The Gewehr 98 uses the 7.92×57mm Mauser round while the 1896 Crag uses the .30-40 Krag round), and reloads quicker and easier (The Gewehr 98 reloads through a stripper clip, while the 1896 Krag loads in 1 bullet at a time).
Gatling Gun vs MG 08/18: Both machineguns get the edge. The Gatling Gun has no kick and rarely jams, yet it is larger, heavier (59.6 lbs compared to the MG 08/18's weight of 14.5 lbs), bulkier, and causes Gatling shoulder if used for an extended period (a medical condition in which the wearer's joint is slowly worn down due to moving their arm in the same motion for a extended period of time). With the MG 08/18, there is some chance for the gun to jam, and there is some kick, but it has a carrying handle for easier transportation, weighs less, and takes 100 to 200 round belts.
Bowie Hunter vs Machete: The Machete gets the edge. The Bowie Hunter may be less of a burden on it's user, but it doesn't have the length or the weight behind each blow that the Machete has.

Common Quality
Larger Than Life: Both of these warrior were the most iconic of their time. The name of Teddy Roosevelt is known far and wide, and his accomplishments are just as well known. He created the Rough Riders & helped win the Spanish-American War, completed the construction of the Panama Canal, and a host of other remarkable feats (including keeping a bear at the White House so he could wrestle it, and numerous political actions that strengthened the country). While he caused some controversy after World War I, Hermann Detzner is still considered to be a incredible German. Not only was he able to confound the allies during WW1, he also navigated previously unexplored territory in New Guinea, wrote a book about his experiences in that land, and continued to be a icon of scientific research until his death on December 1, 1970.
 
Setup
Teddy Roosevelt had been in some hot spots before, but New Guinea was unknown territory for him. He always wanted to go on a jungle expedition there, so he picked four of his toughest Rough Riders, gathered some equipment, and set-out for the island. After he arrived, his men made their way into a thick part of the jungle, and setup a base camp. There were 3 tents, plus some covered crates containing food & weapons, a ring of rocks in which to light a fire, and a Gatling Gun in case they needed heavy firepower. As they were going over some maps they obtained, the Rough Riders were unaware of the danger heading their way. 

They were about to start a late lunch, when one of the Rough Riders heard noises coming from the west side of camp. He ran right over to Teddy's camp, and told him of the trouble.

"Mr. Roosevelt, there's something near the camp!."

Roosevelt was writing a letter as the Rough Rider telling him. Once the Rough Rider was done talking to him, Roosevelt sent the pen down, and turned to face the soldier.

"Calm down, son." said Roosevelt with a straight face. "I heard them coming before you did."

"Them?" the Rough Rider asked nervously. "What do you mean by them?"

"A small group is coming this way." answered Roosevelt. "Judging by the amount of noise, I'm think five individuals. Germans, to be more specifically."

"Germans?" asked the Rough Rider. "What do they want with us, and how do you know they're Germans?"

"They probably see us as a threat." Roosevelt responded. "As for how I know that they're Germans. Well, they're making a lot of noise. That's how I know. Now, get the rest of the men ready. We got a fight on our hands."

The Rough Rider nodded. He went out of the tent, and Roosevelt heard him ordering the others to get ready for the incoming battle. As they were scrambling around, Roosevelt went over to his little stand, and picked up his gun holster, in which his Colt Bisley resided. He attached it to his belt, and walked out of his tent.

Sure enough, the four Rough Riders were facing the west. Two of them had 1896 Krags, another was in the back of the Gatling Gun, and the last had his Colt Bisley ready. Roosevelt walked to the rider behind the Gatling, and gave his final order.

"Don't fire yet. Let them get closer, then unleash all hell."

The rider nodded. He swallowed some spit, then waited until the Germans got closer. They got in closer, then the noise suddenly stopped. All was quiet, then a steady stream of lead came there way, accompanied by a thunderous blast. Given the cue, the Rough Riders returned fire. Roosevelt could see one German rise up from the bush, and took him out with one well-placed headshot from the Bisley. Even though there was a lot of gunfire, Roosevelt could hear the body slam against a tree with a thud.

The gun battle continued, with both sides feeling the heat. The Rough Rider was still sitting behind the Gatling Gun, still continuing the turn the crank. Another German rose up from the bush, and his chest was greeted by a hail of bullets. The mowed right through his lungs and heart, and popped right out of his back. His body slumped down to the ground, and his comrades didn't bother to come over and help.

As the second German died, the gunfire coming from the west immediately stopped. Roosevelt and the Rough Riders cautiously lowered their guns, but still had their eyes & ears open for any sign of the Germans. One of the Rough Riders cautiously walked towards the growth to check if the coast was clear, and after a few seconds, everything seemed to be okay. He signaled Roosevelt and the others to come closer, and just as they were about to, a gunshot echoed through the camp. Roosevelt and the others checked to see if they were shot, but they didn't find even a grazing wound. The Rough Rider that signaled them, however, wasn't so lucky. He got a bullet straight through the back of his neck, and out of the throat. He was dead before he hit the jungle floor.

Roosevelt and the others returned fire. One of the Rough Riders tried to get back to the Gatling Gun to unleash a hellstorm of bullets, but got a shot to the back for his efforts from one of the Germans. His body tripped over a vine as it fell down, and the impact from hitting the ground slightly cracked opened his head.

Roosevelt and the other kept up the fight, but they realized that a change of scenery might turn the tide back to their favor. So, reluctantly, the trio turned to the east and ran, all the while avoiding the gunfire that was still coming at them. Once the Germans saw that they were trying to retreat, they immediately gave chase.

A few minutes went by, and Roosevelt and the others arrived at some mysterious stone ruins. The carvings seemed to predate many of the modern civilizations that existed, but they had little time to sight-see. They could hear the Germans coming towards them, and they got behind cover. Roosevelt and one of the Rough Riders hid behind two stone columns, while the other Rough Rider jumped behind a fallen tree. The reloaded their guns as needed, and waited until the Germans got in closer. The Germans appeared in the clearing right in front of the ruins, guns refreshed, and looking for a fight. It was then that Roosevelt noticed the German with the hat. The hat looked a lot like one of the cowboy hats he used to wear back on his ranch, and the metals he wore on his chest signified that he was the commander of this group. Teddy raised his Bisley to try and get a shot at him, but one of the Germans somehow spotted him, and fired a shot off from his rifle. The shot knocked the revolver out of his hands, and left him slightly stunned. The German was about to get another shot off, when the Rough Rider behind the tree rose up, and landed a spectacular shot right between the German's eyes.

The last two Germans began firing back. As the gunfight came back up to it's earlier fevered pitched, Roosevelt picked his Bisley back, and rejoined the fight. He and his men were just about out of ammo, as the Germans were probably almost out as well. One of Roosevelt's Rough Riders, the one behind the fallen tree, had his 1896 Krag suddenly jam up. He tried to get it to unjam, but before he was able to, a round went straight through the back of his head, and out his left eye.

At this point, Roosevelt was trying to reload his Bisley, but wasn't able to find any round. Disgusted, he holstered the revolved, and took out his Bowie Hunter. The Rough Rider hiding behind the other column had just run out of Krag rounds for his 1896, and took out his own Bowie Hunter. The two snuck off, trying to see if the Germans would follow them. As they were moving, Roosevelt saw the two Germans carrying Lugers in their hands, and he and his last Rough Rider knew that they had to be careful.

The two German were now back in the jungle proper. The German with the hat picked up his pace a bit, while his subordinate slowed down a little bit to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. Unfortunately for him, he didn't noticed the Rough Rider sneaking up behind. Nor did he hear the blade go into his back, and pierce the backside of his heart.


Teddy Roosevelt: 2/Herman Detzner: 1


The German with the hat heard his subordinate hit the ground. He quickly turned around, and saw the Rough Rider wipe blood off of his knife. Unfortunately for the Rough Rider, he didn't see the German with the hat aim his Luger at him, and pulled the trigger twice. Luckily, he did hear the gun go off, and he would hear the echo of those shots as he rested in the afterlife for the rest of eternity.


Teddy Roosevelt: 1/Herman Detzner: 1


Roosevelt saw his last man go down for the count, and was just about to flip out. He waited until the German wearing the hat had his back to him. Before he snuck in for the kill, Roosevelt uttered a small phrase under his breath.

"I'm going to gut you like I did Lawrence of Arabia."

He then broke his silence, but that probably was not one of his best decisions. When the German wearing the hat heard Roosevelt coming, he quickly dropped his Luger, and went straight for the Machete. Roosevelt was still running towards him, but the quickly raised his arm, and threw the machete. Roosevelt had no time to react, and the blade went straight into his neck. It was too deep for him to try and pull it out, and so he fell to the ground, all the while spurting copious amounts of blood, and forming a crimson pool around his head.

Ending Assessment: Both of these warriors were the manliest of men, but Hermann Detzner had the jump on Teddy Roosevelt in regards to technology, and he just seemed to have something psychological that Mr. Roosevelt didn't have.
Strongest Weapon: Moving down Teddy Roosevelt, and bringing in 300 kills, Hermann Detzner's MG 08/18 Machine Gun takes the strongest weapon spot in this matchup.
Weakest Weapon: Because of it's short nature and 6 kills, Teddy Roosevelt's Bowie Hunter is the weakest weapon in this fight.

We're getting closer and closer to the final part of my season, where I'll be doing 3 pop-culture matches. Right now, we're right in the middle of the historical icon section. Take a look below at the weapons that American icon Teddy Roosevelt, and German hero Hermann Detzner, will use against each other in the battle to determine who is the biggest badass of history!

Teddy Roosevelt Weapons
Colt Bisley: A variation of the original colt, the Colt Bisley was one of the last revolvers issued to the US Army. First introduced in 1894 as a pistol for target shooting, the Bisley was more commonly used in America for self-defense. Like the original Colt, the Bisley was a single-action revolver, utilizing a 6-shot cylinder, but that where the similarities end. The Bisley has the distinct advantage of having a longer grip, a wider hammer spur, and a wider trigger. These things made it so that it would be used for fast shooting, and to make it easier for people with hand problems.

1896 Krag Carbine: Despite being in US Army service for only 15 years, the 1896 Krag Carbine was an interesting weapon. Designed by the Norwegians and built by Springfield Armory, the Krag was first introduced in 1892, and became the US Army's standard rifle. Weighing in at a respectable 8.44 pounds, the Krag was a weapon that wouldn't weigh down the user. Utilizing the internal 5-round magazine, a marksman can fire off 30 to 40 rounds a minute. It should be noted that the design of the Krag was outclassed by the Mauser rifle the Spanish used, and made it ill suited for use in tropical environments, like Cuba and the Philippines.

Gatling Gun: A remarkable weapon, the Gatling Gun was also a step in the evolution of machine guns. Invented by Doctor Richard Jorden Gatling, the original purpose of the weapon was to reduce the size of armies and so reduce the number of casualties, while at the same time increasing the amount of firepower. The Gatling Gun is a rather heavy & bulky weapon, as it weighs in at 59.6 pounds and is attached to a wagon-like system. By turning the crack, the gun's 10 barrels would rotate in a 360 circle, and a round would fire from the top barrel. It was theorized that the gun would fire up to 1,200 rounds per minute, but it was more realistically able to fire 400 rounds a minute in a combat situation.

Bowie Hunter: A variation on the original Bowie Knife, the Bowie Hunter could be considered a streamlined copy of the blade. Regardless of the version used, they both had things in common, including a 9 inch blade, a light weight of 1.5 pounds, and are constructed of steel. Both knives were used like a utility blade, and they could even be thrown, although this is a last resort method.

Hermann Detzner Weapons
Luger PO8 Pistol: Developed in 1898 by Georg Luger, the PO8 was one of the most iconic pistols ever made & used. It should be noted that the United States were almost going to receive the gun as their primary sidearm. Mr. Luger came over to the United States in 1901 and tested it in front of some top US Army officials, but it was ultimately rejected for the later M1911. Regardless of that fact, the Luger was a relatively well built pistol. It was very ergonomical in it's design, and was quite accurate.

Gewehr 98 Bolt-Action Rifle: An ancestor to the Kar98k used during WW2, the Gewehr 98 was one of the hardiest guns ever produced. The most remarkable aspect of the 98 was the bolt-action system it used. The system of the bolt was so simple, safe, strong, and well designed, other countries copied off of it for their own rifles, including the US. Taking 5-round stripper clips of 7.92x57mm IS round, the Gewehr 98 can hit targets up to 500 meters with the iron sights, and 800 meters with a scope attached.

MG 08/18 Machinegun: An air-cooled version of the earlier MG 08/15, The MG 08/18 is a big improvement of it's predecessor. For starters, the massive water jacket of the 08/15 was replace with a smaller lotted jacket, which made the gun lighter. A carrying handle was also another improvement, as it allowed a soldier to carry the gun in one hand, and something else in the other hand. The gun still kept it's predecessor's rate of fire (450 rounds a minute) and ammo capacity (100 or 200 round belts), and thus made it a lethal weapon on the battlefield.

Machete: Part tool, part weapon, and all deadly. The machete is a tool that is essential for exploring in densely wooded areas. The blade measures in at 2 feet, complete with a quarter-foot grip. The machete's blade is skinny at the bottom, but it gets wider at least half-way up, and the tip itself is the widest part. Because of the blade's weight, it easily cuts through brush, and if need be, cut through limbs.

Taken from Wikipedia: "Adolf Hitler was an Austrian-born German politician and the leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party (commonly referred to as the Nazi Party). He was chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945 and dictator of Nazi Germany (as Führer und Reichskanzler) from 1934 to 1945. Hitler is commonly associated with the rise of fascism in Europe, World War II, and the Holocaust.

A decorated veteran of World War I, Hitler joined the German Workers' Party, precursor of the Nazi Party, in 1919, and became leader of the NSDAP in 1921. In 1923, he attempted a coup d'état, known as the Beer Hall Putsch, in Munich. The failed coup resulted in Hitler's imprisonment, during which time he wrote his memoir, Mein Kampf (My Struggle). After his release in 1924, Hitler gained popular support by attacking the Treaty of Versailles and promoting Pan-Germanism, antisemitism, and anticommunism with charismatic oratory and Nazi propaganda. Kim Jong Ill Quick Bio

If Adolf Hitler was an insane German, then Kim Jong-Il was an insane Korean. Born in 1941, Kim Jong-Il was the son of the equally infamous Kim-Il Sung, the leader of Korea before him. Even when his father was still in power, Kim Jong-Il consolidated his power base before his eventual rise to power. In October of 1980, he gained complete control of the Sixth Party Congress, and by February 1982, observers from outside North Korea deemed him to be the successor of Kim-Il Sung. Ironically, the government at this time were developing a personality cult around him, as the North Korean media were hailing him as " the fearless leader" and "the great successor to the revolutionary cause". Through this ego boost, Kim-Jong Il emerged as the most powerful figure in North Korea. Right behind his father, of course.

Who Got The Edge
Walther P38 vs Makarov: Both Pistols get the edge. They both have the same clip size (8 rounds), but the Makarov weighs less when unloaded (730g compared to the P38's unloaded weight of 840g), while the P38 has a longer barrel (125mm compared to the Makarov's barrel length of 93.5mm).
MP40 vs Mini-Uzi: Both Submachine Guns get the edge. They both have the same clips size (32 rounds) and effective range (100 meters), but the MP40 has a longer barrel (251mm compared to the Mini-Uzi's barrel length of 197mm), while the Mini-Uzi weighs less when unloaded (2.7kg compared to the MP40's unloaded weight of 4.03kg), and has a greater rate of fire (950 rounds a minute compared to the MP40's firing rate of 500 rounds a minute).
MP44 vs Type 68 AKM: The Type 68 AKM gets the edge. It's lighter (3.14kg compared to the MP44's weight of 5.22kg), has a higher rate of fire (600 rounds a minute compared to the MP44's firing rate of 500 rounds a minute), and has a higher ammo capacity (normally takes 30-round clips, but can also accept 40-round clips and the RPK's 75-round drum, while the MP44 can only take 30-round clips).
German Stick Grenade vs RGD-5 Grenade: The German Stick Grenade gets the edge. Much like the Chinese Stick Grenade (which is based off of the German grenade), the German Stick Grenade is packed with a greater amount of explosive material, and the stick keeps the grenade in place when it lands on the ground.

Common Quality
Insanity: Both of these warriors are incredibly insane. No one, whether historian or Holocaust survivor, can deny the madness that brewed within Hitler's mind. No only did he manage to manipulate an entire country into serving him, but he also slaughtered a large swathe of the Jewish people in an effort to advance his horrific goals. Though his goals didn't necessarily concern the entire world (just his neighbors and the US), Kim Jong Il is an equally insane leader. His list of deplorable actions include kidnapping South Korean film director Shin Sang-ok and his actress wife Choi Eun-hee in an effort to build a North Korea's film industry, viewing any slight deviation from his thinking from his ministers, party officials, and followers as a sign of disloyalty, and in general just acting very akward and mentally deranged.

Setup
It was a cold, dreary afternoon at the Reichstag. The forecast called for rain, and Mother Nature delivered. In his office at the top of the building, Adolf Hitler was looking out the window, and onto the soaked cityscape of Berlin. A streak of lightning flew across the sky, giving the otherwise gloomy city a quick glimpse of light. Hitler didn't like the light, as for some reason his eyes were quite sensitive today. After wiping his eyes, he heard a knock at the door. Sitting back down behind his deck, he beckoned the individual in.

"Fuhrer, I'm sorry if I was disturbing." the individual said.

"Not at all Rolf." replied Hitler. "I was just enjoying a silent moment. Is there something you need to tell me."

"Yes." replied Rolf. "Your one-o-clock appointment has arrived."

"Ah, Kim Jong-Il made it after all." said Hitler. "Send him in."

Rolf nodded. He closed the door, and 3 seconds later, Kim Jong-Ill and two Korean soldiers came walking in. Despite how short he was, it was apparent that he could go ballistic at any moment.

"Kim Jong-Il, it's a pleasure." said Hitler as he bent over his desk, and shook hands with the Korean dictator. "I hope that your trip wasn't unpleasant."

"If onry." replied Kim Jong-Il. "I terr you, my trip was terribre."

"Please say that again?" asked Hitler, doing the best he could to not laugh.

"Terribre." Kim Jong-Il said. "My trip was terribre."

"One more time." said Hitler, his urge to laugh was slowly increasing.

"I had a bad time coming here." replied a slightly irritated Kim Jong-Il.

"Sorry, I didn't mean any disrespect." said Hitler as he waved his hand. "Now, lets talk about this alliance plan of yours."

"Indeed, lets tark about it." Kim Jong-Il. "Arthough my country has arways reried on the principre of Juche, perhaps an arriance with a country that has simirar idears to ours." As Kim Jong-Il spoke, Hitler did all he could to hold in the laughter. After a few minutes, he finally had to let it out. Hitler let out a torrent of laughter that shook the room slightly. Kim Jong-Il wasn't amused in the slightest by Hitler's laughter, and he began to grit his teeth at him. Hitler saw this, and stopped laughing almost immediately. "Do you find my voice to be hirarious?" asked Kim Jong-Il angrily.

Hitler didn't laugh, but he let out a small chuckle. "Nein, I didn't find your voice to be funny at all." he replied.

"Then rets get back to our pran." Kim Jong-Il spoke. "I'rr bring some of the most fanaticar sordiers in the worrd. What I want to know is, what wirr you bring to the tabre?"

Once again, Hitler burst out laughing. As he was laughing, Kim Jong-Il was gritting his teeth again, but this time he was tightly gripping the arms of his chair, and his nails were carving scratches. Hitler heard this, and stopped laughing.

"Kim Jong-Il, I need to confess something." said Hitler as he wiped a tear from his eyes. "I didn't invite you here to listen to your alliance proposal."

"No?" Kim Jong-Il asked. "Then what the Herr did you invite me here for."

"A laugh." replied Hitler, still letting out a few giggles. "I am amazed than anyone takes you seriously. You look like a little kid with wrinkles, and the fact that your people find you intimidating just makes you look even more ridiculous."

With those last words, Kim Jong-Il suddenly rose up out of his seat. He began shouting at Hitler, and to the two soldiers who came into the office with him. A second later, the two soldiers drew Makarov pistols, and aimed them right at Hitler's head. "So Hitrer, do you have any finar words?" asked Kim Jong-Il.

"Nein." replied Hitler, all the while slowly creeping towards the Walther P38 that was under his desk. The Korean soldiers were slowly pulling the triggers of their pistols, but their speed proved to be their downfall. A hail of bullets came flying through the office door, and slammed right into one of Kim Jong-Il's soldiers, and the body fell right over the desk, landing next to Hitler as he hid under his desk.


Adolf Hitler: 5/Kim Jong-il: 4


Hitler rose up behind the desk, and tried to land a headshot on the other Korean soldier, but he only landed a grazing shoulder wound. As the soldier tumbled into his leader, Hitler made a way through the door, where he was greeted by Rolf and three other SS guards.

"Fuhrer, are you alright?" asked Rolf.

"I am." replied Hitler, who spent a moment to catch his breath.

"We're getting you out of here." said Rolf. "Your car is parked right outside. We need to leave..."

Before he could finish, two of Kim Jong-Il's soldiers came running down the hall to their right, firing their AKM right on Hitler and his men. One of the SS got right in front of Hitler, and took a few bullets for him.


Adolf Hitler: 4/Kim Jong-Il: 4


Hitler and the rest of the group made their way down the hall. Just before they were out of Kim Jong-Il's sight, Rolf took off the stick grenade that was hanging off of his belt, and primed it for detonation. When the Koreans got in range, Rolf threw the device right at them. Kim Jong-Il managed to duck into a supply closest, and did one of his soldiers, but the other two didn't find a place to hide. The grenade exploded, and sent shrapnel of metal and wood right into their bodies. One of the soldiers was simply thrown backwards into the wall, while the other had the misfortune of getting blown off of the railing.


Adolf Hitler: 4/Kim Jong-Il: 2


Hitler and the group saw the soldier's body fall down as they were heading towards the front door. Bullets coming from Kim Jong-Il and his last soldier went right through the glass door, stopping the escaping group in their tracks. The group then returned fire, with Hitler landing another grazing would, this time shooting a bullet into Kim Jong-Il. He dropped the Makarov pistol he was using, and ducked behind the railing. Meanwhile, the last soldier tended to his leader's wound, and was so enraged by the bloody sight, he stood up from behind cover, and threw a RGD-5 grenade at Hitler and the group. One of the SS guards pushed everybody outside, and jumped on the explosive to make sure that any shrapnel would be absorbed by him only. After 4 seconds, the explosive went off, and the SS guard fulfilled his final duty.


Adolf Hitler: 3/Kim Jong-Il: 2


Hitler, Rolf, and the last SS guard got to their leader's private car. Rolf and the guard were up in front, while Hitler sat in the back. Rolf turned the key, and the car roared to life. As they were speeding from the Reichstag, they saw Kim Jong-Il and his last soldier come out of the building. They turned around, and breathed a sigh of relief.

"Mein Fuhrer, are you alright?" asked Rolf.

"I've had better days." replied Hitler.

"We're taking you to the bunker." Rolf spoke. "You'll be safe there, and we'll deal with Kim Jong-Il."

As if on cue, a bullet came right through the car, and landed in the head of the SS guard sitting right next to Rolf. His body slumped forward, and the only thing that prevented him from falling completely over was the seatbelt that kept him in place.


Adolf Hitler: 2/Kim Jong-Il: 2


Hitler leaned out from his window, and saw the Kim Jong-Il and his last soldier coming up behind them in a stolen car. The soldier leaned out from his window, and fired off his AKM. Rolf swerved the car back and forth to make sure that the bullets didn't hit them, while Hitler was firing back. Through some stroke of luck, one of his shots knocked the AKM out of the soldier's hands, and another round went right through the throat of the soldier. The body was half slumped in his seat, while the other half was sticking out of the window, the bullet wound letting out a torrent of blood.


Adolf Hitler: 2/Kim Jong-Il: 1


Kim Jong-il slammed his hand against the steering wheel, and slammed his foot down on the gas. The car sped up, and eventually was driving alongside Hitler and Rolf. Hitler began firing at Kim Jong-Il, while his foe took his foot off of the gas, and the car slowed down and got out of range of Hitler's Walther P38. Kim Jong-Il then drove up Rolf's side, and started firing at him. Rolf started bashing his car against Kim Jong-Il, who still was driving right next to him. Getting fed up with all of this, Rolf took off another stick grenade, armed it, and tossed it into the car next to him. Kim Jong-Il saw the grenade enter the vehicle, but couldn't do a thing about it. 5 seconds later, the bomb went off, and engulfed the inside with flame, shrapnel, and screams.
